Seven Golf Club Set!

A Great Custom Fitting For A

Seven Golf Club Set!

Seven Golf Club Set

I made a great new friend recently – Mike Gailey from Piney Creek, North Carolina.  Mike asked me to help him create a unique golf club set for him.  He gets to play 9 holes most mornings, on a hilly course.  He has some back problems, but still likes to walk and carry his clubs.  So he has been playing with a seven golf club set – and wanted a set where there are approximately 30 yard gaps between clubs.  It was a lot of fun to help him get what he desired – and this is what we came up with….

  • First, a SeeMore putter – about 3 inches shorter than the putter he was previously playing with.  His old putter had a very heavy swingweight, and he had trouble "getting the golf ball to the hole."  Not any more!
  • Second – three Sterling Single Length irons – a 5 hybrid, 9 iron, and gap wedge.  He loves these, says he hits them very straight, and they have the gapping he was looking for.
  • Third – two Edel wedges – 60 degree and 64 degree lofts.  These are an inch shorter than his Sterling irons.  Just what he hoped for!
  • Finally – a Wishon Golf 18 degree 2 hybrid iron – with the same shaft in it that is in his other irons.  He can it this off the tee and in the fairway.

There is no big moral to this post today – other than, for me, it was really great fun helping Mike get what he needs to help him play better golf.  Now Mike – about that future hole in one!

ONE MORE THING! – my next published podcast interview will come out on Tuesday April 25 (not the 24th) – in case you were wondering on the 24th…

Our 2017 Golf Trip!

Our 2017 Golf Trip

AND "Golf From Point A"

Our 2017 Golf Trip!

The picture shows the 12 great guys who are on our 2017 Golf Trip to Georgia and Florida.  As I write this on Saturday evening, we just finished our annual "Pink Ball" competition – this year at the terrific World Woods Pine Barrens course in Brooksville, Florida.  We have all had another great time playing golf and socializing.

I typically do not play close to great golf in these trips, but some concepts in a book I have just finished help me to better manage my game my emotions on the golf course.  The book is "Golf From Point A" by Susie Meyers and Valerie Lazar.  I decided to give "Point A" thinking a go the last two days.  I shot 84 both days on two very challenging courses – and I know had more fun too.  If you are looking to find a better way to manage your emotions and thoughts on the golf course – this is one to definitely consider!

===============

For you readers of my blog in the Oak Ridge, Knoxville, and East Tennessee areas, we are having two events this coming week at the Centennial Golf Academy.  The first is an Open House at 7 pm on Tuesday April 4.  Des Mahoney will be talking about his very successful golf coaching program, and I will be discussing how custom club fitting and putting improvement can help you play our best.

The second is my "Putting Is HARD Day!" that will be held on Saturday April 8 from 9 am to 3 pm. No appointment necessary – come and let me provide you some insights on how you can improve your putting – and hopefully have you spend some time on my SAM PuttLab and see the neat new SAM 3D software that I have to help evaluate putting strokes!

Flatstick Academy Level 1 Certification Class!

3 Days Of INTENSE Learning At The

Flatstick Academy Level 1 Certification Class!

Flatstick Academy Level 1 Certification

As many of you read this, I am into a 7 hour drive to Buies Creek, NC to attend the Flatstick Academy Level 1 Certification Class.  3 days of Putting Learning and Coaching Heaven with David Orr – something I have been wanting to do for 2 years.  Will it truly result in Putting Knowledge Mastery? – well truthfully no, but it will be a huge step on that path.  I look forward to sharing what I learn in the class with you in the future – and particularly in my personal putting coaching efforts with golfers.  The Game Improvement Golf truck will get a lot of well earned miles put on it this week!

————————-

One small request that I want to share with you this week.  A few days ago, I asked a golfer I was doing some club work for if he had read my book "The Fit Is IT!!"  He said no, I gave it to him – and the next day he said How Come You Did Not Share This With Me Before?

So – if you have NOT purchased and read my book on Custom Club Fitting I hope you will consider doing so.  Not because I am going to become a millionaire from the profits – but because I believe, as I did when I wrote it, that it contains useful, simple information about custom fitting that all golfers need to know.  So – here is the link to purchase the book:

Putter Grip On “Straight?”

When Is YOUR

Putter Grip On "Straight?"

Putter Grip On "Straight?"Last week a golfing friend asked to install a new grip on his Scotty Cameron 38 inch Counterbalanced putter.  See the picture above of the final grip install –  pretty abismal, don't you think?

NOPE!

A few months ago, I had a conversation with a good club fitting friend, Russ Ryden from Fit2Score Golf.  He talked some with me about installing putter grips, and mentioned at least one "pretty well known" PGA Tour Pro who does not necessarily have his putter grip on square – and Russ suggested I try this.

So – back to the putter grip shown above.  When I first installed it I did all that I could to ensure that it was on "straight."  When I handed the putter to him, he said he did not like the way the grip set up, and that the face looked open to him at address.  So I thought – why not experiment! – and I turned the grip a little to the right for him and said how about now?  He loved it – felt great to set up the putter at address, and when I checked aim at address it was dead on.

Last Friday I asked him about his putting.  He said he continues to love the way his putter now sets up, and that he is putting well.

Well, this experience has changed everything that I think about installing putter grips.  I no longer will assume that putting the grip on straight – with the flat part perpendicular to the face of the putter – is optimal.  As much as I can, I will make sure that the golfer touches the putter, before I finish the grip installation to see how it sets up and feels for HIM!

Now – I am about to ship a finished putter to a golfer who lives 4 hours away.  What about him – well, he wanted a Round Putter Grip so no violation of my new rule!
