Show Notes:
Welcome Dr. Rob Gray – a professor at Arizona State University who does research related to perceptual-motor skills, and who recently published “How We Learn To Move.”
- Rob shares some of his Personal Story – what drove him to a career in Experimental Psychology with a focus on Visual Control and Movement.
- He talks about why he started the Perception and Action Podcast in 2015, and then to write his new book.
- Rob talks about why we seem to have learned poor concepts related to learning to move and creating new skills.
- An interesting statement in the book is that “Repetition is not only NOT the key to becoming skillful, but it is impossible.” Rob talks some about how we best create skillful behavior, and the relationship between skills and habits.
- One of the most interesting chapters in the book is titled “Freedom Through Constraints.” A surprising concept that he discusses.
- MY favorite chapter in the book was Chapter 10 – where Rob presents a new perspective about what it means to be Creative – and how Constraits are important in the creative process.
- He talks about an important theme in the book – that coaches need to be more Designers and Guides, rather than Instructors.
- Finally, Rob ends our discussion with some Final Words for golfers about things they can do to learn and develop skills to take to the golf course!
Rob THANKS for your great work and for writing How We Learn To Move!

Shout Out!
I have had an “interesting” two weeks of recovering from an allergic reaction to a medication. BUT this has caused me to dedicate myself to improving my fitness and thanks Jeff Pelizzaro for creating the 8 Week ACTIVATE Program! Every morning, every day for 8 weeks.
