Welcome back (for the 7th time!) David Orr – Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher, and creator of the Flatstick Academy in Southern Pines, North Carolina.
- David shares his concept that it is easier to learn something new rather than unlearning something old – UNLEARNING, LEARNING, RELEARNING.
- He has learned that many golfers he sees have a lot of “mantras” related to putting – “straight back straight through, swing the putter like a pendulum,” and more. AND that golfers should focus MORE on where they are related to the important Putting Skills – like Read, Speed, and Line.
- David shared this quote – “feel is a memory of a past sensation.” Great putters store the feels and sensations of their skillful putting strokes – and use feedback and recall to recreate good strokes.
- Using the “Unlearn, Learn, Relearn” learning approach, David broke down the putting myth “take it back short and accelerate through the ball.”
- We also talked about another prevalent putting myth – “keep your head down when you stroke a putt.” And the truth about what the “cool kids” do in their putting strokes and why.
- He talked about the importance of golfers improving their putting “process” – and that the average golfer has a routine but not a process for their putting.
- David’s Final Words for average golfers – pay more attention to your process, and to what you feel rather than the putting results you get – and Take Inventory of your putting skills to guide you on the things you need to improve.
