“Confidence” and Custom Clubfitting

Over the past few days, the theme of confidence and it’s role in playing golf and in club fitting seems important.  There were a number of instances related to confidence that came up recently that are worth sharing…

1.  Saturday I had a great iron fitting experience with a player who was clearly playing with clubs that were too long for him.  He originally was hitting the ball on the toe of his club, and when he started hitting shorter test clubs right in the center of the club he was very pleased.  During the fitting he said something to me like “it is great to be confident that the club you are hitting really fits you.”  He also noted that he believes Tom Weiskopf said “the problem with most golfers is that they do not believe that their golf clubs will do what they were designed to do.”  Somehow, I think seeing good results and truly being able to trust your clubs has to make a difference.

2.  Today I did another iron fitting with a lady who has been playing for a few years but wants to take the next step in improving her game.  In her case she loves the look, feel, and performance of hybrid clubs and she is going to play a full hybrid set through her pitching wedge.  But I just loved something she said – she likes to think after a round of golf of the Shots That She Hit Best.  I loved that thought, and sure wish I did that more often, instead of thinking “would have shot better if I did ….”

Knowing that you are playing clubs that fit you – instead of playing clubs that you just hope fit you – has to help a golfer to pull the trigger and hit good shots.  But also, putting those good shots in your memory bank so the next time you can say “did this before, know I can do it” is just as important.

The Fit Is IT!!
