Club Feel vs Club Data — Better To Have BOTH!
Combining Clubfitting Test Data and Feel Information is a Winning Combination!
A very good local player told me today that he is a "feel player" and that he does not know how to make good use of data like launch angles, spin etc. in terms of his golf clubs.
It is not a surprise to hear a good player say something like this. I suspect the reason he would say this is that he has not been exposed to a true custom clubfitting, where there is an emphasis on obtaining the best results and not simply on selling golf clubs in the shortest time possible.
Not everyone is a "feel player," one who can detect small differences in club characteristics. For example this weekend we did two Miura iron fittings, both with Aerotech shafts. One of the two players could detect very small differences in club MOI – 1 gram of head weight difference. Not only did one specific MOI feel best, but his performance with that club was also the best. What becomes important then is to be able to actually build the Miura irons to as close as possible to that specific test club MOI.
Data and feel can be great partners is great clubfitting. Data shows when specific club specs produce the best results, and feel often an confirm that these club specs are the best ones. And – best of all – a custom clubfitter and clubbuilder can then build these clubs to the test specs so that the "feel can become real" and produce optimum club results.
Feel + Data = True Custom Clubfitting and Optimum Club Performance.
The Fit Is IT!!
