A REMARKABLE Flatstick Putting Conference!

“It’s ALWAYS An Inside Job”…

A REMARKABLE Flatstick Putting Conference!

Last Saturday I arrived at Southern Pines, NC for the 3rd Flatstick Academy Putting Conference.  My part of the conference – with almost 40 other attendees – would happen on Sunday and Monday.  I have looked forward to this since the last conference 3 years ago.

Then – at 8:30 pm on Saturday – things got really interesting.  There was a power outage.  At the time I did not realize this was the result of an Intentional Attack on the Duke Energy power grid – and that power would be unavailable for about 40,000 people in the area until about Thursday.

Sunday morning early I emailed David Orr and asked what was going on for the conference – and he said “this is out of my control.”  So I drove to the conference center, and everyone was there.  Why? – well all of the attendees had a great attitude and high level of acceptance about what happened.  We all wanted the conference to continue because we were confident we would find a way to conduct the conference.

And well, you know – everything turned out great!  We did not have a project to show slides, but we worked around that.  David worked with the Southern Pines staff to find a way to get us breakfast and lunch food.  The meeting room was cold, but we were mentally tough about adapting to that.  I actually had brought two iPhone chargers, and these were really handy to have so that I could keep my phone charged the two days of the event.

David always in at least one of his presentations talks about putting says “It Is Always An Inside Job.”  Well, this conference was a great success in spite of – and maybe a bit because of – lots of challenges we had to adapt to.

Thanks to David Orr for organizing another great putting conference – to David for his presentations – to the other presenters Paul Dewland, Bill Smittle, Preston Combs, and Biv Wadden.  And to the Southern Pines hotel staff for making our stay memorable and productive.

I do have to say though – it was a great feeling when I was driving home about 10 miles outside of Southern Pines – that I first saw a working stop light!!
