NO Heavy Wedgies!

Wedge Shaft Weight MATTERS

No Heavy Wedgies!

One of my great joys is to get to check club specs for the Roane State golf team kids I get to work with.  It has been 2 years – because of COVID – since I have been able to do this.  Over the past two weeks, I checked all of the club specs for the men’s team members.

There are always some more simple things that  pop up in doing these checks – particularly some loft and lie iron adjustments that will be needed.  However, THIS time I was struck but a few of the sets I checked where the wedges were significantly different – mostly in terms of total club weight – than the rest of the set of irons.

Here’s an example.  Well-fit iron shafts in some cases weighed 90 to 100 grams – but the shafts in the wedges are “stock” wedge shafts – that might weigh 120 to even 130 grams.  So wedge weight differences might be in the range of 30 to 40 grams heavier.  Maybe these work, but I have my doubts that the wedges will play as good as they can when golfers play with “too heavy” shafts.

If you have been fit for a set of irons – and decided to to play with “stock” wedges that you bought separately from the irons – here are some things to consider…

So if your wedge game performance is really important to you – you want to play “Better Than Average” – pay as much attention to the shafts in your wedges as you do in your other irons.
