The MAGIC Of External Focus AND Intent!
"Brush The Ground!"
I bet, if you have been a reader of my posts for awhile, you have seen this image before. My good friend Mike McFadden said them at an AGCP Roundtable event more than 10 years ago - and my understanding of how to change and improve a golf swing were changed forever.
What is an external and internal focus in terms of learning golf movements - and why care? A simplistic way to look at it is that an internal focus is more about attention to movements of body parts, and an external focus is more about attention to a specific task to accomplish. THIS TPI ARTICLE gives a bit more about the difference between the two and when and why both are important.
I have found, at least for me lately, that having an external focus on some specific tasks has made a huge difference in my ability to change and improve my short game performance. Another thing I have found - practicing using external cues is more fun for me. And finally - I can take the external cues I use in practice and apply them to improve my short game shots on the golf course!
So - particularly regarding short game improvement - here are two really neat James Ridyard videos that I think can illustrate the power and magic of external cues to help you improve your short game!
- James Ridyard - "Intent Precedes Motion!"
- James Ridyard - "Teaching A Golf Beginner To Chip And Pitch!"
So - "BRUSH THE GROUND!"
