What Is YOUR Wedge Bounce?

Maybe your wedge bounce is more than you think!

The picture above is of a new club fitting tool I received today.  It is a Wedge Bounce Gauge that I purchased from GolfMechanix in Taiwan.  

Why measure wedge bounce?  Well, there seems to be a lot of interesting happenings in the world of wedges and wedge design.  If you have been a long-time reader of my weekly blog, you will know that I believe most golfers need at least 10, and perhaps as much as 20, degrees of bounce on their wedges.  This is based on testing, done by Edel Golf and Mike Adams, that resulted in the development of the Edel Wedge grinds.  

Personally I play a 58 degree Edel wedge with 19 degrees of bounce, a 54 with 15 degrees of bounce, and a 50 degree wedge with 11 degrees of bounce.  They are by far the best and most forgiving wedges, for all types of shots, that I have ever played.

If you watch the "world of wedges" carefully, I think you are now seeing that more and more of the OEMs are coming out with wedges that have more bounce than in the past.  And, in some cases, coming out with wedges that have wider soles and more "effective bounce."  

All this is very good news for the average player, who has in the past been told – for example – that 4 to 6 degrees of bounce on lob wedges is right.  Now if you look at new designs on OEM web site, you will see lob wedges with at least 10 degrees of bounce.

So I look forward, in the future, to measuring the bounce of the wedges that come into my shop, and seeing if the measured bounce is REALLY what is noted on the club.  Who knows, I might find out something new and surprising!
