The “Book Ends” Of Effective Practice
The “Book Ends” Of Effective Practice
DO THESE TWO THINGS!!
It’s Good To Be Back – and Thank You for being here!
During my “August Hybernation” I did a lot of deep thinking (and personal golf practicing) about how to make practice more effective. A few years ago, I created the little “VistaPrint” card shown above with information I pulled from Adam Young’s important book The Practice Manual. And most recently, I discovered two valuable book written by learning expert Doug Lemon – The Coach’s Guide To Teaching and Practice Perfect.
It struck me that there are two things – what I call “Book Ends” of effective practice – that are easy to remember, and that are part of any efforts to Practice To Learn A Skill…
- First, have a Specific Objective for each and every practice session. What are you planning to accomplish – a swing change, a putting improvement. SOMETHING that you are working toward. More than just “I am going to hit balls,” or “I am going to putt.”
- Second, at the end of your practice session – take time to Think About What You Accomplished, What You Learned. Be excited about anything that you did to create change and learn a skill. And write down what you learned somewhere, so you can remember it.
Practice To LEARN – Learning and Improving Any Skill is HARD, REWARDING WORK!
